About Devon

We're stoked to finally have you on Between the Brackets! Tell us about yourself.

Hello! My name is Devon, and I’m excited to finally share my own Between the Brackets!

Fun fact: These employee spotlights are one of the ways I initially came across Webstacks and eventually applied, so it’s cool to see things come full circle. Alright, let’s get into it!

A little bit about myself - I was born and raised in the Philadelphia area, grew up with my mom, dad, sister, and two pups. I attended an all-boys high school, which was an incredible experience and gave me many of my best friends today. After graduating, I went on to study Marketing at the University of Pittsburgh. That was another amazing 4 years, but it was cut short in March of 2020 due to the pandemic. Amidst the chaos going on in the world, I went back home to Philly and worked alongside my father in his automotive repair business for about 12 months. While I learned so much and really enjoyed helping my dad, I was anxious to start a career in marketing.

I ended up moving across the country to San Diego, where my sister had relocated to a couple years prior. I didn’t really have much of a plan to be honest - I just knew I wanted a change of scenery and loved SD. Eventually, I found myself at Webstacks, and am so happy and grateful for how things have panned out.

What is your role here at Webstacks?

I have a few different responsibilities here at Webstacks. Most of my time is spent working with our internal marketing team on content marketing and SEO initiatives. I help strategize and execute a lot of the content on our website. From blogs and case studies to eBooks, and other campaigns - I come up with the marketing assets and strategies to grow our website traffic, attract leads, and drive pipeline for our sales team.

Something I love about my role is that I also get some exposure to external projects. I’ve conducted brand discovery interviews with client stakeholders, developed content strategies, and presented SEO recommendations to some awesome enterprises and startups in SaaS and Web3.

Word on the street is you’re an aviation enthusiast. What sparked your passion for aviation and have you ever piloted an aircraft yourself?

I’m what fellow enthusiasts would call an “avgeek” haha. I have been obsessed with aviation since I was a kid. I have very fond memories of flying with my dad in his twin-engine turboprop airplane. I don’t have my pilot’s license, but maybe someday I will! For now, I love being a passenger. One of my dreams is to fly first class on a Boeing 747 or Airbus A380 - I think I finally have enough credit card points saved up, I just need to figure out my next trip.

I also recently launched my own aviation blog, WebFlite! I was able to take a lot of what I’ve learned about SEO and content marketing at Webstacks, and apply it to my own website! Special shoutout to Chloe, Mo, and Vick from Webstacks for helping me design and build the blog - I couldn’t have done it without them!

As someone who has solo traveled Europe, which city/destination left the biggest impression on you and why?

Between the Brackets: Devon Image 2

At the end of last summer, I took a two-month trip backpacking across Europe, visiting 6 different countries. It was one of the coolest and eye-opening experiences of my life, and I hope I get to do a similar trip again in 2024!

My favorite memory was from a day in Germany! My friend and I rented a Porsche 911 and drove from Munich to Neuschwanstein Castle in the Bavarian Alps. We hiked several miles, and stumbled upon this amazing view of the castle! It was so surreal standing on this slightly sketchy bridge suspended 90 meters above a gorge and looking out towards the castle and the stunning backdrop of the German villages.

Content Marketing at Webstacks

Give us an inside look at your day-to-day.

My days often include a mix of planning and execution for Webstacks’ website content. On any given day, I can be creating or managing the creation of blogs, case studies, eBooks or other types of content that can be used by our marketing, sales, or customer success teams.

There is also a ton of research that goes into our content production. I’m constantly digging around in tools like Hubspot, Google Analytics, Ahrefs, and Full Story and using that data to guide decision-making. If I am not focused on net-new content, I am evaluating our current performance and strategizing how we can optimize for conversions or move leads further down the funnel.

What is your favorite Webstacks memory so far?

I think one of my best memories was when we moved to the new office just a week after I had started at Webstacks. With so much more space, I was dead set on adding a ping-pong table to the office. I searched Facebook marketplace for days and eventually found the perfect deal. A couple of Webstackers and I went to get the table a few blocks away and actually pushed it through the streets of Downtown San Diego back to the new Webstacks HQ. That ping pong table is a staple of our office, and it’s hosted plenty of intense matches over the years.

Besides that, our company-wide events like the Padres game outings and Webstacks Holiday Parties are always a blast. It’s so awesome getting the entire team together and seeing the faces of those who work remotely.

What do you think is one of the most underrated skills to have as a Content Marketer?

I think content marketers often overlook the importance of engagement.

This all ties back to your content strategy:

  1. What topics and types of content do your target audience care most about? Research, experiment, and double down on those that show success.

  2. Once you’ve acquired traffic, what tactics can be utilized to build a loyal audience and optimize for conversions? Map out your user journeys. Expand these journeys by producing an arsenal of relevant resources that you can leverage to build your brand equity and keep users coming back for more.

I could write 5,000 words on content marketing, but I’ll just leave it at that for now.
